Who does The Moment belong to?

The Moment opens with a spectacle: Charli XCX performing under flashing strobe lights, the colors shifting rapidly as if testing different versions of her in real time. Critics noted how the film repeatedly cuts between these high-intensity performances and quieter scenes of her alone, anxious, and questioning her relevance. This tension forms the film’s central question: when a cultural moment grows larger than the artist who sparked it, who actually owns it?

For most of the last century, cultural influence followed a predictable path: institutions produced, audiences consumed, and marketing amplified. Today that structure has flattened. Culture spreads laterally rather than top-down and is shaped by networks of creators who reinterpret and redistribute ideas for their own audiences. Campaigns have therefore become negotiations, with their meanings formed through a type of exchange rather than dictated outright.

Few recent examples demonstrate this shift more clearly than Brat and the phenomenon that became known as Brat Summer. When Charli XCX released the album, its visual identity (acid green backgrounds, blunt typography, intentionally unpolished graphics) had no obvious intention as a marketing campaign. Ironically, it was the rustic energy of the album’s visuals that made it such a sound-board for creators, which in turn, propelled Brat into its own phenomenon. Creators turned the aesthetic into anything they put their mind to: memes, edits, fake ads. At one point, Brat green was the most distinctive color on the internet.

Traditional marketing aims for consistency whereas Brat thrived on mutation. Its design language was simple enough that anyone could reproduce it, and that accessibility lowered the barrier to cultural entry. Instead of audiences encountering the album primarily through official channels, they encountered it through each other. Every remix reinforced the original, creating a feedback loop where community activity generated momentum faster than any media buy could.

For brands, this marks a structural shift. Cultural relevance is no longer achieved by broadcasting messages but instead by creating raw material that creators can translate. The role of strategy therefore, isn’t to finalize a campaign per se but to sow the seeds for it to flourish amid a target audience. For creators, it signals something else: creative control and authorship. A shift from passive engagement into actual content production - content that amplifies the original output and gives it its own type of velocity.

Two years later, The Moment functions as a kind of meta-commentary on that reality. The film blends documentary realism with scripted fiction, dramatizing a fictionalized version of Charli navigating fame at the height of her cultural saturation. Perhaps what makes it particularly interesting is the method. By co-writing a stylized narrative about her own cultural peak, she’s doing exactly what creators did to her album…remixing it, exaggerating it, reframing it, and putting it back into circulation. In other words, the artist becomes another creator inside her own ecosystem.

That loop is the real story. It’s what demonstrates how modern relevance works. Cultural moments now operate as collaborative systems in which artists(or brands) initiate, creators interpret and in turn audiences redistribute. Here, the power of the marketing campaign has become decentralized.

Brat Summer spread because people saw each other participating - not just consuming. The aesthetic became shorthand for a kind of playful irreverence and a ‘it’s not that deep’ energy that anyone could adapt. Therefore, by the time Brat reached its peak in terms of success, it no longer belonged solely to Charli XCX but to the entire network that was sustaining it.

That’s the lesson The Moment leaves us with, and it’s one that brands and creators should take seriously: the moment doesn’t necessarily belong to its originator but to the people who remix it and keep it in circulation.
